Annual Meeting
The SHCS annual meeting is a brief evening where members get together to introduce themselves or reunite, while getting an update on everything that the SHCS has been working on throughout the previous year. Historically, Art Ganz, from the Salt Pond Coalition has spoken to educate members about the current state of the local ponds and oceans.
Fishing Derby
The fishing derby has become a fun tradition where kids of all ages get to bring their fishing rods, bait and fishing skills down to Grove dock to spend the morning eating donuts, dropping their line and checking out what cool wildlife emerges from the pond. The kids get to learn a little bit about what is in and around the waters in which they swim, all while having a blast!
Trip to Mystic Aquarium
Every summer, the SHCS links up with the staff at the Mystic Aquarium for a day of exploration, education and fun! The visit includes a behind the scenes look at how the staff of the aquarium helps to care and preserve the animals and their environment. The kids get to see first hand the rescue center where the animals are kept and cared for before they can be released into their natural environment. They also get to explore the aquarium touch tanks, both on the floor and in the educational center where they further learn about the land animals and conditions needed to preserve them. The day includes lots of fun bonuses too like the special exhibit (currently dinosaurs), an IMAX experience and the seal show.
In conjunction with this field trip experience, the aquarium also brings the learning to us right on the Shelter Harbor beach. A representative from the aquarium comes out both on the beach and pond to educate our youth on the sea life and ecosystem that exists all around us.
